Zagreb

Cafe’s

Cafes in Zagreb all seem to have a dairy free milk alternative so anywhere you go you should be ok. However. My husband over on Uncomfortably Cafinated is a coffee snob and I’m a tea snob so check out his blog for the best places to go.

Eating out

I’ll start with budget friendly Green Point. They do a breakfast deal of toast with veg and seitan with tea/coffee/shake (smoothie) for 25kr/£3.

Lunch wise they have 4 meal deals including a burger, falafel wrap, kebabs which come with either chips or vegetables or a stir fry and soup. All four meal deals are 37kr/£4.30.

We went for the burger deal, you can choose between seitan or tofu. The tofu it turns out is those dried soy steaks which actually worked really well. You then get a choice of vegan mayo, salsa either hot or mild and a variety of salad… or as we did… a bit of everything. They offer both vegetarian and vegan so make sure to ask for soy milk/vegan cheese/vegan mayo.

Next up is Root – Fast Food. A newly opened (and sadly closed a few weeks after we came home) place hidden back from the road. They specialise in burgers but also have daily dishes. This place is 100% vegan so you can pick anything off the menu and know your good to go.

Their dish of the day is 40kr/£4.70. We had the braised Barley with corn and young onion.

Their burgers which are their speciality come in a create your own style. You choose your patty, then your bun, then your sauces and last of all onion/no onion. We went of the spicy chickpea and bean patty with corn bread, all the sauce and onion.

We were sharing so cutting this in half was incredibly messy, but damn it was tasty! We wanted another one after this but we’re just too full.

Last but not least the most expensive but most posh Zrno bio bistro. It’s a beautiful place. We went there a couple of times. The first was for some lunch, Leo and I shared a Caesar salad and the Bio Kiss dessert

We later returned for a full lunch where we had kayu bread with seitan and wok vegetables with a side of salad, sweet potato fries and home made ketchup followed by two desserts

Sweet Treats

Vis a vis is a little shop hidden down a side street behind the main restaurant Vincek. While the sign says sugar free/gluten free/vegan etc this only applies to a selection of items so be sure to double check before choosing.

They offer fruit sorbets and some amazing patisserie. As I currently work in a gelato shop we went straight of the cakes. At an average of 22kr/£2.60 each it a bargain for what you get.

Food Shopping

Considering there aren’t that many vegan/vegetarian places in Zagreb… well according to Happy Cow that is… there is vegan food available everywhere.

The first two places to lookmout for are Konzum and Spar which are regular chain supermarkets. dm is what looks like a drugstore and müller is what looks like a department store. What all these stores have in common is they have a bio section which contains a wide selection of dairy free milks, soy products, tofu, pâtés, cereals… even coconut sugar, all clearly marked as vegan.

Looking for more specialist vegan food … there is bio & bio which is also a chain store. It’s not 100% vegan and it’s a bit more pricey than elsewhere but it’s got a much wider range of food.

If your just after fruit and vegetables though your best bet is to hit the markets. This is where you’ll get the best bargains!

Looking for somewhere to stay? We always use Booking.com and can’t recommend them enough!
